The Monastery of Santa Maria de Arouca was founded in the 10th century and was double, i.e., it welcomed both women and men. In 1154 with the arrival of D. Mafalda, daughter of D. Sancho I, it became exclusively female. Between the 17th and 18th centuries, the monastery underwent renovation work and the former residence of the priests is now the municipal library of Arouca. The body that served public functions of the Monastery is now the access point to the museum. In this museum we can observe the best regional collections of sacred art of the country, among painting, sculpture, furniture and silverware of the XVI to XVIII centuries. We can also find a collection of music books, rare and of great historical interest.
